Sighting in a rifle seems to be a very difficult step for new shooters. To ease the burden of being a first-timer, below are the steps in sighting-in a rifle, along with some techniques of rifle experts.
Go to the Right Rifle Range
The right rifle range for your first-time of sight-setting and hoot practice is rifle range which should provide you with twenty-five and a hundred yard firing positions. If you can't find one in your local area, take your portable shooting equipment with you and look for a wide open space. Once you find the perfect spot, try to make accurate measurements and set up the required ranges and firing positions.
Bore Sight you rifle first
Bore sighting your rifle can be done through the old-fashioned way or through the use of a bore collimator. In case you want to do it the traditional manner, look for a rifle that allows you to see the barrel from the gun's rear. Firmly mount a scope onto your rifle and focus your eyesight on the barrel. After putting the rifle on a sand bag rest, you have to remove the bolt and examine if you have centered your target in the bore. Securing the rifle in its rest position, adjust the iron sights to a sight position that centers the target. You can then fire a shot so as to test if you are doing the right thing in setting your sight positions.
Take another shot
The first shot is just a test. You need more shots to confirm your sight settings. Secure the rifle on the sand bag rest again. While you maintain the rest position of the rifle, set the iron sights on the center of the target. Adjust the sight settings and make sure that they are in the same line as your first shot. Shoot again.
Utilize Your Tools
When shooting your rifle and testing your sight settings, you should make full use of your shooting equipment. It you have a variable power scope; you can hasten the process of sight setting by adjusting your scope to its highest practical power. This allows you to see the target in a sharper and clearer image. However, do take note of the fact that the highest practical power of scopes do not equate to their maximum power. This is because some scopes offer a better image when they are set below their highest magnification.
Be Calm and Aim
When rifle shooting, you should prepare not just your tools, but yourself. Be sure that you are calm. Avoid taking coffee or other things that may promote anxiety and edginess before you go and while you are at the firing range. When you aim at your target, be sure that you are relaxed. Before each shot, perform a simple anxiety test. After you have loaded your rifle and aimed your shot, try closing your eyes for ten seconds first. If you open you eyes only to find out that your aim has drifted from the target, then you are probably tensed. If that's the case then take a deep breath and calm yourself. If you are uncomfortable with your position, find one that eases your muscles. Look for the right position and feeling that allows you to close your eyes but still find that the rifle is still at its right target when you open them. Note that a good shot requires a good shooting position and a calm shooter.
If You Miss the Target, Try Again
If things don't work out fine, don't lose hope. Try again. Though you have finished bore sighting your rifle, it may be that your bullet hole is still not in line with the center of your target. If this is the case, look through your scope and observe the target's position. Regulate your scope accordingly, based on the increments needed to align the point of impact to your target.
