Purple Turbo
What stall do I need? SBC 350?
I am building a 350 for my 78 Z28, I want to know if I am going to need more than the stock stall for my engine combo, turbo 350 w shiftkit, the motor has a performer RPM, stock quadrabog, comp cams thumpr 279 in. 297 ex. duration, .479in./.465ex lift, on a 107 lobe seperation, I am using 1.6 rockers, power band of the cam is supposed to be 2000-5800. Stock bottom end D dish pistons, Im using W.P. sportsman 2 heads 64cc 2.02intake 1.60exaust with a 200cc intake runner, headers dumping into purple hornies, the rearend has 3.42 gears probably going to go to 4.10's, this car is not a daily driver, more like a street/strip car, Ive been told that the vega torqe converter will increase your stall speed, but I think it would burn up with a v8 behind it, does this combo sound like it would be unstreetable with stock stall? What converter would work the best if I need to run a looser one? Thanks in advance.
Higher stall speed is the key.
A higher stall converter allows the vehicle to accelerate better from a dead stop. Strength and durability is an additional benefit if the converter is properly engineered. Furnace brazing is used to strengthen the converter internally for high performance, racing and heavy-duty applications
What Is Stall Speed?
Stall speed numbers (2000, 2400, 3000 etc) let you know what to expect from the converter. If a 2400 is selected, you should be able to footbrake stall the converter to about 2400 RPM. This should provide anywhere from 500 to 1000 more RPM to launch the vehicle from a dead stop, as compared to the stock converter. This increase should substantially improve your acceleration capability.
