Does a 1995 volvo 850 have a limp home mode?
Our 850 had been running for a short time with a really bad vacuum leak, which has been corrected. Now, it refuses to boost. The turbo will not engage. Is it possible the car is in some type of limp home mode? How does one correct this?
first off i have to answer with a question, does the boost gauge on the dash change it's reading at all? [it should be registering vacume at idle and be on zero when car is off, if not suspect a forgotten vacume line when last repaired.
next do you hear the turbo spool up but have no increase in power?
if so suspect a leak in the piping that goes from turbo to inter-cooler or inter-cooler to throttle body [along with exaggerated turbo whine a whistling or air rushing sound]
if none of the above have helped, [with engine off and KEYS IN POCKET] remove the air filter housing cover and piping to air inlet of turbo [don't forget the quick disconnect for the air mass unit] and lay aside. with a flashlight inspect the turbo's impeller:
[try wiggling the shaft in and out while turning the shaft gently with your finger tips [thrust play], also check for play up and down and right and left of shaft axis[radial play] IF ANY PLAY IS FELT AT ALL. the turbo must be replaced. now spin shaft with fingertips [it should spin easily and continue to spin without noise for a second or so, if rough or stops immediately when you let go. the turbo will have to be replaced..
if all of the above check out positively you still may have a waste gate problem [i have seen a couple of waste gate actuators whose retaining clips have come off and control shaft fall away from waste gate allowing the gate to go wide open, bypassing any boost generated, internally.
i hope these tips have helped and the cost of your repair is no more than an "E-cilp" retainer. good luck
