The Seagate FreeAgent Desk line of external hard drives provides a wide array of attractive, powerful and easy to use storage solutions covering all capacities up to 1.5 TB. Here we take a look at one of the most popular sizes, the 500GB edition (model number ST305004FDD2E1-RK). I have been running this drive for a few weeks now and would like to share my findings with you.
In recent years backup technology has advanced beyond recognition for small office and home users like you and me. Many years ago the only way to backup large amounts of data was via tape backup units and more recently DVD's, although any decent amount of data needed several disks to fit it all on. This 500GB HDD from Seagate is now at a price range that is really affordable and makes backing up your data so much easier. My IT expert friend swears by the Seagate Freeagent Desk USB series of external drives so I bought this unit to back up my work and digital photograph collection.
The unit is really well built. It has a classy silver finish that looks really stylish and can be mounted horizontally or vertically which is a great solution for those with limited space - Seagate think of it all. The FreeAgent Desk also sports an attractive LED light that really makes it stand out above the competition. Before you mount the drive you need to install some little rubber feet - don't forget like me or your new Free Agent will wobble all over the place.
Installation is really easy with just the connection of the power and USB2 cables required, both of which are supplied. My Seagate Desk came with a USB cable about 1.5m in length so if you require a longer one make sure you pick one up. Once switched on my Windows XP computer presented me with a menu asking me if I wanted to install the included backup software which is preinstalled on the FreeAgent Desk. I didn't bother as I already have my own software but it's nice that Seagate include some for you.
If you do install the software it will enable you to schedule a backup at a regular time (e.g. every night). Once set up you can simply leave the drive to do all the hard work.
As for transfer speeds, the drive uses the USB 2.0 interface (USB3 is not supported) so should be pretty speedy. It won't be as fast as an internal drive but then you can't just plug them in or move them around easily.
Another unusual, but welcome, thing is that the Seagate FreeAgent Desk USB come factory formatted using the NTFS so there is no need to reformat it from the ancient FAT32 format.
One final thing to note is the warranty - Seagate kindly offer a full five year guarantee with this drive which makes it stand out from the competition - a lot of external hard drive manufactures only offer a one or two year warranty.
Overall the Seagate Free Agent Desk is a great looking drive with fast transfer speeds and a superb warranty. What more could you ask for?
