Can I substitute regular wire for a jumper on an internal hard drive?
I have an internal hard drive that I want to add to my computer as a slave. But I lost the jumper that it came with, can I just use a little bit of wire and wrap it around the two posts, or do I need genuine jumpers. If I need actual jumpers I'm not sure where to look, I've looked at Radio Shack, but they only have packages of 100 and I only need one. What do I do?
Yes its possible...however you need a wire wrap tool and some very thin wire. I remember they do make that wire as i use to used it with experiments (I think it was #80 but i'm not sure) by the time you get the tool and wire it would still cost you. Try to get one from a friend. You could use the jumper cap from your CMOS on your mother board..Its only used when you want to clear the CMOS. Newer mother boards may not have the jumper cap. I think you can get a bag of 5 from a good computer store like Micro Center. I always tell my students...NEVER throw away anything from your old computers or any parts left over from a new build, you never know when you may need some part.
