Underwater robots are autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). They are usually known as unmanned underwater vehicles in the military and work on specified devices like propellers for propulsion and rudders for controlling the direction of travel under the water's surface. These devices are powered by batteries or fuel cells and can operate in deep water. Most underwater robots use hydraulic batteries because they are more reliable in the deep sea.
AUVs comprise complicated programming languages, controllers, and advanced sensors. They possess powerful control units, a user-friendly programming terminal, and process-oriented software applications. AUVs carry sensors to navigate autonomously and for mapping features of the ocean. AUV sensors include compasses, depth sensors, sidescan, sonars, magnetometers, thermistors, and conductivity probes. These robots also carry cameras to provide pictures of sea floor.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed the first AUV in the 1970s. AUVs come in various shapes and styles for different purposes. AUVs are used in many fields, including research for the military and the oil and gas industry. AUVs are also an effective tool for open water monitoring and mapping to many oceanographic institutions around the world.
Prior to commencing any construction of subsea infrastructures, the oil and gas industry uses AUVs for mapping the seafloor. This allows oil companies to install pipelines in the most effective manner and minimizes the probability of disruption of the environment. In the military, AUVs are used to detect if there are any mines in an area. AUVs are also useful for scientists to study oceanography and the ocean floor. Researchers claim that underwater robots make research easier, cheaper, and faster, and help in the study of the underwater environment.
AUVs are available in several designs that are capable of conducting operations on the ocean floor. AUVs are helpful in the development of subsea processing in deep and ultra deep offshore oilfields and in maintenance of those oilfields. They allow monitoring, inspection, harvesting, and repairing of the complex environment of the sea.
