Battle Brawlers
Of course it wouldn't be an RPG without a battle system! The battle system works like many other RPGs - turn based. When it is your turn to attack, you have four different options: attack normally, use items, use magic, or defend. Attacking is just that - attacking. Items are mainly items to recover your health, but you'll also have items to recover your flower points (needed for magic), revive a fallen partner, or perform other special attacks. The magic abilities are exclusive to each character. While most of the magic are high damage attacks, some of them heal. Princess Toadstool's magic, for instance, has good healing.
Also in the attack system is a time based system. Basically what this does is make your attacks and magic perform better. But to pull it all off, you have to press a certain button at just the right time. Like for instance, when you attack, press the attack button just before the attack starts and you can have that attack deal more damage. During the healing magic with Princess Toadstool, you can actually recover more HP by pressing the right button at the right time.
Enemies in the game range from your classic Mario foes (Goombas, Koopas, Lakitus) to many other enemies. Of course you have boss battles to get the star pieces you need, which are always difficult. By winning a battle, you gain experience points, and by gaining enough experience points, you level up. Leveling up gives you a choice of three enhancements - more attack power, move magic power, and more health. You will need to mix these up evenly, as they will all come in handy down the road. If you get to certain levels, you also learn a new magic ability, so it is important that you fight often to get ready to tackle the harder things down the road.
The gameplay in this game is outstanding. It absolutely keeps you interested and doesn't get repetitive (that is, if you exclude the battling, but that is always fun). It is RPG at its finest, and the Mario theme is captured flawlessly. The music is always going to be the usual Nintendo catchy and happy go lucky style, and this game is no exception. There are some songs you may not like, but other themes you will like. The regular battle theme is decent, and I like the theme when you fight Smithy. The sound effects are really decent as well. They move the game along.
Overall, Super Mario RPG is a game that no retro gamer (like myself) needs to be without, ever. If you like Mario, you need this game in your backpack. Even if you dislike Mario but love RPGs, this is a game that you need to play. And even still, if you're not a fan of Mario or RPGs, you still need to play this because it is so much fun. I remember selling the game because I needed money at the time, but I regretted that heavily. I eventually bought the game again and this time I will never let it go. Awesome game.
